ACCESS CONTROL

Access control is a system that allows you to control access to areas and resources in a given physical facility. The use of access control is of prime importance when you are seeking to secure important, confidential or sensitive information and equipment.

WHAT IT CAN DO FOR YOU

An access control system or what is known as a card access system, allows you to control access to areas and resources within your facility.

With an Access Control system in place, every employee is given a swipe card. Depending on their authorization, this card can restrict or enable access to a property, a building or a room. In a nutshell, this technology determines:

  • who is allowed to enter or exit
  • where they can enter or exit
  • when they can enter or exit

We as business owners all know that physical key management is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Mechanical locks and keys do not allow restriction of the key holders to specific times and dates, nor can they provide records of the key used on any specific door and keys can be easily copied.

When a set of keys are lost, you either need to change your locks or risk the possibility of unauthorized entry. When a swipe card is lost, it can be immediately deactivated with the click of a mouse.

HOW IT WORKS

Access Control uses computers to solve the limitations of mechanical locks and keys. When a card is presented to an electronic card reader, the information is instantaneously sent through to a control panel containing a highly reliable processor. The control panel will then compare the unique credentials of the card to a predetermined access control list, it will then grant or deny entry to the cardholder and make a record of the event.

With a swipe card system, when access is granted, the door is unlocked for a set period of time and the transaction is recorded. When access is refused, the door remains locked and the attempted access is recorded. Best of all, if you have a monitored alarm system installed in the building, when access is granted to enter the premises with a swipe card, it can disable the alarm, allowing you to retain confidential security codes. The system will also monitor the door and alarm if the door is forced open or held open too long after being unlocked.
